In Session – My Style of Coaching

September 10, 2009 Leave a comment

In Session – Posts under this category are for sharing with you my adventures as a coach in personal and professional development.

Since this is my first solo post in this category, I am about to share with you: why I got into coaching, a bit about my style of coaching, and the progress I have made thus far.

It was an evening in the Fall of 2008… I was working as part of a field support team in health care, and this particular day I wanted to meet with one of my colleagues after work. Fortunately our schedules were conducive to meeting, and we scheduled time together at a conveniently located Starbucks. I was pleasantly surprised how my mind opened up, more than usual, to the conversation we had.

Feeling somewhat discontent with my health care career, I believe my mind had become depleted of any sense of fulfillment, and was desperate to exercise incredible acts of creativity. The timing was right! I was ready to listen, and my colleague was forthcoming with valuable information, which encouraged me to make a very big change.

As we shared stories of the day’s events, it became more of a commiseration, and we both realized this. Chuckling at our mutual realization, it was time for a refill so that we could continue with revelation, excitement, and well… possibilities.

We sat back down, got comfortable, and started to share our aspirations. As it happened, my colleague started with her desire to have been a Life Coach, and was in a somewhat casual fashion, working toward this. She shared her experience so far, and I could relate to the excitement with which she expressed herself. It was practically contagious! She had been talking to me while staring off into the distance, as though she were reliving some of her coaching experience while realizing the potential. It was at this moment, her focus changed from an intangible place in her mind to an almost direct-link to mine. Her eyes lit up, and she had a genuine smile on her face, as though she had unlocked the mystery of the universe. As it turns out the “universe” was me.

Already engaged in her experience in coaching, she suggested that I do the same. My background is in high-level customer service, and more than a decade in human & organizational development. I have always enjoyed helping people, and over the years have gained incredible knowledge and insight to do so, and willfully! I enjoy what I do, and have begun professionally coaching people in personal & professional development.

My style of coaching is unique, as it is for all intensive purposes my own. I have always been candid, and I find this serves me well. There is little room for misunderstanding, and it helps keep my clients focused on our sessions, and ultimately their goals. Offering practical methods and solutions is far better than asking someone to read up on this season’s fad self-help miracle.

If I were asked to use specific words to describe my style of coaching, I would reply with: candid, pragmatic, zen, minimalist… based on fundamentals, and not tactics. I find that this style is well received, and the results come much more quickly.

I truly enjoy seeing my clients make progress, whether it’s realizing a goal they wish to attain, reaching a milestone toward their aim, or achieving their goal completely. I am fulfilled, as are they, and it’s absolutely wonderful.

At the end of each day, I am simply grateful.

Thanks for reading.

Double Exposure – Zen Habits

Double Exposure – Posts under this category are posts published by other authors on their blogs that I want to share with you, with of course a little commentary!

Done: Reduce Task Friction to Get to Task Completion
Post written by Leo Babauta

“‘Done’ is a beautiful word.

It means you’ve achieved something, no matter how miniscule [sic], a victory in a world filled with defeats. It is a tiny leap of joy in your heart, not only a step towards something wonderful but actually something wonderful itself.

Done means you’ve won, in a battle against procrastination and distraction and endless boring meetings and the constant requests of others, in the battle against a world conspiring to stop Done from ever happening.”

I love this post by Leo, and I am an avid reader of his blog, Zen Habits. As I read this post I smiled because I am a man of simple means. All that I carry with me is: house key, and a super-slim wallet with my driver’s license and debit card. I have weaned myself from carrying my mobile phone everywhere I go, but I sometimes do have it as well.

A note about the super-slim wallet, especially for men – A bulky wallet that is placed in your back pocket can cause severe back problems over time, as it causes you to sit un-evenly and your lower back will compensate, but at a health cost later down the road.

Leo is correct in his post, in that the less you carry, the less burden you have for your body and your mind.

Thank you for reading.

A Special Thanks To…

September 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Often times we wake up, looking through blurred vision, and ideally the smell of freshly brewed coffee… and ponder, “who has helped shape who I have become?”

I have made incredible strides this year. When I made my 2009 New Year resolution(s), I had no idea that my eyes would have been opened to an almost “new world”. I have two people in particular, that I consider mentors, and I thank them for the insight and courage they have given me, and continue to provide.

I first discovered Leo Babauta’s Zen Habits in the early part of this year, followed by Jonathan Mead’s Illuminated Mind. Both are incredible men with the power to share knowledge, in the form of blogs, tweets, and e-books.

I am fortunate to have found them, my mentors. We all benefit from them.

Thank you.

I Simply Smiled

September 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Wow. Yesterday I had my first professional session online, and during this session, I noticed I was smiling. I credit the smile to the fact that I was truly happy being able to help someone through the use of technology.

Someone had reached out to me from a remote place, and I remote to them. I felt a sense of accomplishment, and I believe another part of my smile was due to the achievement of a personal goal.

For many years, I have held positions in which I was capable and challenged, and gained significant experience, for which I am grateful. I now work in a different sort of role, in which I feel fulfilled on a personal level, and not just the progress indicated on a report or spreadsheet.

As I went to sleep last night, I simply smiled.
